Matching Existing and Emerging
Treatments of Psychological Trauma
Across a Continuum of Care
lana l. seiler, lcsw
James c. montgomery, md
As treatments of psychological trauma emerge,
determining which of these are safe and effective
across multiple levels of care, as well as incorporating
new neurobiologically based interventions, becomes
paramount. Existing methods of treating both PTSD
and CPTSD such as psychodrama, Internal Family
Systems, EMDR, and DBT have been proved in the
literature and in treatment outcomes. However,
today's emerging treatment methods, including
hyperbaric oxygen therapy, stellate ganglion block,
ketamine, deep transcranial magnetic stimulation,
neurofeedback, and SSP, are utilized less frequently.
Clinicians and clinical programs can incorporate some
of these emerging methods safely and effectively
across levels of care depending on the different levels
of psychiatric severity. This presentation will explore
ways newer and emerging neurobiologically based
treatments can be utilized with existing methods to
improve overall outcomes by increasing our ability to
effectively treat the constellation of symptoms that
exists with complex traumatic stress disorders across a
continuum of care. This presentation can be useful for
both program developers and individual providers.

Alleviating Guilt and Shame
Through Self-Compassion

This presentation will provide a novel perspective on
understanding the leadership traits commonly held by
people with substance use disorder. This knowledge
can be incorporated into the clinical setting through
the integration of leadership assessment instruments,
which can help the clinician and client gain a better
understanding of behavioral patterns and how they can
be transformed into positive attributes. The findings
from a peer-reviewed published article suggest that
people with substance use disorder have inherent
qualities that can position them for effective leadership.

disorders will experience. There are numerous factors
that contribute to the emotional experience of shame
and guilt including genetics, family relationships, and
social influences. The emotional experience of guilt
and shame can impact the trajectory of an individual's
life. This feeling of shame resonates at the very core of
the individual and can influence engaging in behaviors
that reinforce the negative belief about themselves.
It is very challenging for the individual to hold space
for self-compassion when shame is present. The
presentation will review the difference between guilt
and shame and focus on ways to engage individuals
in a group and individual setting to ignite a belief
that change is possible. The role of attachment styles
and self-compassion will help provide insight into the
behaviors as well as present opportunity for clinical
intervention. This presentation will provide insight
into utilizing self-compassion as a way to provide
compassion and understanding to themselves in
challenging times.
Evidence-based Augmentation
Therapies for Alcohol Use Disorder
James greenBlatt, md
Alcohol use disorders (AUDs) present today's
healthcare professionals with the gravest of challenges.
Associated with some of the highest relapse rates
in addiction medicine, AUDs also rank among the
leading lifestyle-related causes of death in the US. That
AUD relapse rates remain high despite an established
treatment paradigm speaks to a need to further
advance current models. Nutritional deficits associated
with AUDs are often overlooked. It is well established
that essential nutrient deficiencies can significantly
and adversely impact brain function. Traditional
therapeutics often do not sufficiently address
nutritional deficiencies characteristic of AUDs, hinging
outcomes upon modalities administered to patients
in whom brain function is suboptimal. Logically,
strategies to correct micronutrient deficiencies and
optimize brain function may significantly improve AUD
therapeutics. This lecture will present evidence-based
augmentation strategies to support AUD treatment.
Research demonstrating robust correlations between
deficits of essential nutrients and brain function will
be presented, with a focus on niacin and trace lithium.
The mechanisms through which these nutrients confer
neuroprotection will be explored, along with strategies
for testing and repletion. Upon completion, attendees
will be able to substantiate the clinical utility of
nutritional correction for AUDs, and safely incorporate
augmentation strategies into personalized treatment
protocols to maximize patient outcomes.
