Introduction to the Baker Act and
Marchman Act
anelia shaheed, Jd, esQ.
This workshop addresses the scope of Florida's
Marchman Act (Chapter 397, F.S.) and highlights
changes to the law that were enacted in 2016.
This course is designed to help behavioral health
professionals understand their role and responsibilities
in initiating Marchman Act petitions, the legal
procedures involved, and the strengths and limitations
of the involuntary assessment and treatment process.
We will also examine Florida's Baker Act law (Chapter
394) and addresses: who qualifies for Baker Act
services, the different methods used to initiate services
at a Baker Act facility, the services that individuals
can receive, and discharge procedures. There will be
discussion of Florida's system of Baker Act receiving
facilities for persons who are experiencing mental
health crises and identifies the typical processes that
occur during inpatient care in a Baker Act receiving
facility-from admission to discharge. This course
addresses specific forms, required time frames for
actions, and schedules for specific notifications.
Matching Existing and Emerging
Treatments of Psychological Trauma
Across a Continuum of Care
lana l. seiler, lcsw; James c.
montgomery, md
As treatments of psychological trauma emerge,
determining which of these are safe and effective
across multiple levels of care, as well as incorporating
new neurobiologically based interventions becomes
paramount. Existing methods of treating both PTSD and
CPTSD such as psychodrama, Internal Family Systems,
EMDR, DBT have been proven in the literature and
in treatment outcomes. However, today's emerging
treatment methods including Hyperbaric Oxygen
Therapy, Stella Ganglion block, Ketamine, deep
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, neurofeedback, and
SSP are utilized less frequently. Clinicians and clinical
programs can incorporate some of these emerging
methods safely and effectively across levels of care
depending on the different levels of psychiatric severity.
Presentation will explore ways newer and emerging
neurobiologically based treatments can be utilized
with existing methods to improve overall outcomes by
increasing our ability to effectively treat the constellation
of symptoms that exists with complex traumatic stress
disorders across a continuum of care. This presentation
can be useful for both program developers and
individual providers.

Career Development " We Only
Keep What We Have by Giving
it Away "
Jay w. voigt, mBa, med, lpc, cas shrmcp;
Jonathan p. de carlo, cas
Career development is not embedded in the culture
of addiction treatment professionals as deeply as
other sectors in healthcare. This workshop is intended
to help individuals new to substance use disorder
treatment begin to map out a career path. Attendees
will be asked to practice career development skills
such as networking, self-assessment, and job analysis
as part of the workshop. This workshop will provide
a foundational framework for early career addiction
treatment professionals to develop competencies
necessary to establish a fulfilling career in the
substance use disorder treatment industry. Participants
will develop an understanding and practice
professional networking strategies, complete a brief
career assessment and identify roles within substance
use disorder settings that maximize the participants
use of their strengths, and identify professional skills or
competencies necessary for their " dream job. "

Contingency Management
for Substance Use Disorders:
Rewarding Recovery
steven l. proctor, phd
Contingency management for substance use disorders
(ie, rewarding people, often with money, for achieving
their recovery goals) is backed by decades of research
support yet remains highly underutilized in the midst
of an escalating drug overdose crisis with deaths
topping 100,000 last year (CDC, 2022). Unlike opioid
use disorder, there are currently no FDA-approved
medications for the treatment of stimulant use
disorder, underscoring the need for greater adoption
of effective psychosocial treatments like contingency
management. Contingency management is associated
with numerous benefits, including improved
treatment engagement, retention, and outcomes.
Despite strong evidence, motivational incentives are
rarely used in real-world practice due to a number of
concerns, including most notably, the apparent lack
of innovation, as well as moral, philosophical, ethical,
and economic concerns, and even federal rules meant
to prevent illegal inducements in healthcare. Still,
other opponents argue that some patients will try to
" game " the system by simply doing whatever it takes
to earn monetary rewards. An up-to-date review of the
current evidence base for contingency management
is presented with a particular focus on stimulant and
opioid use disorders. Common barriers and solutions
to implementation, as well as implications for routine
clinical practice and future research are discussed.
Attendees will learn how to implement contingency
management, an evidence-based intervention, into
their own practice.
Is Age Just a Number: Treating
Trauma in the Older Generation
Versus the Younger Generation
deBorah kuzmin, lcsw
The over 60 population, or the " older adult " population,
often present with unique issues experienced by no
other age group. The combined factors of trauma,
co-occurring with a substance use disorder and
the addition of medical and cognitive issues, pose
distinctive challenges in recognizing and addressing
