Establishing a Preventative
Model to Address Relapse in
Our Workforce
Judy t. crane, ma, lmhc, cap, icadc,
csat; BenJamin seymour, cadc, cip
Many of us who work in behavioral health have
first-hand experiences with substance use disorders,
mental health, or other process addictions. Peerreview
data on the management of relapse within the
behavioral healthcare workforce is lacking. Increasing
pressures within our system has led to a dramatic
increase in burnout and compassion fatigue, which
can exacerbate potential relapse if not addressed. In
this presentation we will investigate how behavioral
health professionals can benefit from identifying and
healing their own challenges.

Alleviating Guilt and Shame Through
Self-Compassion
Justin wolFe,
ma, lcpc, cadc, crc, pcgc
Shame and guilt rob us of our ability to hold
compassion for ourselves. These emotional
experiences that many individuals with substance use
and mental health disorders experience act as barrier
to one's recovery journey. There are numerous factors
that contribute to the emotional experience of shame
and leave one feeling disconnected from themselves
and the world around them. This powerful emotional
experience has the ability to impact the trajectory of an
individual's life if it is left unaddressed. Shame can be
the very glue that keeps one stuck in a lifestyle that that
makes facing each new day overwhelming. At the same
time, it is very challenging for the individual to hold
any space for self-compassion when shame is present.
The only space held when shame is present is the idea,
" I am not enough. " The presentation will focus on the
power of shame and how it is formed, the influence
over one's actions and beliefs and how to support and
guide individuals in the journey of developing a sense
of compassion for themselves in the process.
Looking Back and Stepping
Forward: Innovative Engagement in
the Tele-Behavioral-Health Era
alycia n. degraFF, phd, lmFt-s
samuel macmaster, phd
george massengill, BBa
Although the pandemic may ebb and flow, we know
the world of tele-behavioral-health (TBH) services are
here to stay. On one hand, it is a world where clients
have access to high-quality care at the tips of their
fingers, and clinicians can reach deep into the rural
parts of our communities providing care where no
care has been before. On the other hand is a whole
new slew of challenges related to client engagement,
transitions through the continuum of tele-care, and
the development of tele-wise clinicians. How does a
director manage the myriad of program development,
quality maintenance, and evaluation? How does an
administrator monitor business operations, employee
retention/engagement/development, or imagine the
environment of care? Moreover, how do we provide
creative services to the dually diagnosed client and
keep them engaged for an appropriate length of
stay in the virtual space? This presenter trio includes
a therapist and program director, an administrator,
and an executive that ran treatment programs before,
during, and after the first 2 years of the pandemic. A
look back at necessary adaptations and lessons learned
through this era provides deep insight for the next
steps forward to maintaining long-lasting, successful
treatment programs. Attendees will walk away from
this presentation having gained tangible skills and
knowledge related to executive functions of maintaining
a successful treatment program, administrative
leadership necessities, and provisions for direct care,
treatment, and services. Topics covered will include
revenue restructuring, systemic reorganization,
culture transformation, clinical supervision and staff
engagement, the work-from-home/in-home-treatment
paradigm shift, telehealth and licensing regulation
complications, ensuring client confidentiality and safety,
and client engagement and retention.
Understanding Trauma
michelle duBey, lcsw, lisw, ccts-i
This workshop will cover: defining trauma; identifying
types of trauma; how the stress response system works;
and how we heal from trauma. The presentation explores
what trauma really is-a response to an event, not the
event itself. Loss of self, a major symptom of a trauma
event, will be analyzed in detail. Identifying trauma will
identify and define big " T " and little " t " traumas, adverse
childhood experiences (ACEs), the impact on human
development, and the relationship between trauma and
addiction. How the stress response system works will
show the relationship of cortisol and the stress response
system (SRS), the purpose of the SRS, and what happens
when the SRS becomes dysregulated. Healing from
trauma will look at best practices, including how
mindfulness can be utilized, the extreme importance of
the therapeutic relationship, types of therapy modalities,
and what makes therapy work in clinical settings. With
expanded understanding of the impact of therapeutic
relationships, attendees will be able to better navigate
the therapeutic alliance of patient and therapist, and
patient and their support network.
