Attendees will be introduced to evidence-based
research that highlights the therapeutic benefits of
music and sound. According to studies conducted
by Thoma et al (2013) and Koelsch (2014), music and
sound can regulate the nervous system, respiratory
functions, and the release of endorphins in the body,
which can lead to a reduction in muscle tension and
an increase in relaxation. Practical demonstrations will
be provided to showcase how music and sound can
be integrated with traditional relaxation techniques,
such as breath control and body scanning. These
methods have been proven to support therapists
and patients in achieving their therapeutic goals.
The effectiveness of these techniques has been
demonstrated in studies conducted by Larrson et al
(2017) and Nilsson (2008). The techniques taught
during the event are inclusive and transferable,
making them suitable for individuals working
with patients who are experiencing challenges
with emotional regulation, communication, and
physical symptoms. Research by Gold et al (2019)
and Bensimon et al (2008) has shown that these
techniques are effective when working with patients
who have substance misuse disorders, trauma, and
mental health concerns.
Eastern Religious Influence,
Psychology, and Enhancing DBT
and ACT Effectiveness
christopher w. mcduFFie, msw,
acsw, cadcii
Attendees will learn how to enhance their
understanding and application of DBT and ACT,
through a lens of Buddhist psychology, teachings,
and practices. Clients will benefit from this enhanced
understanding and be better equipped to apply
Buddhist teachings with DBT and ACT coping skills to
help prevent relapse. Attendees are encouraged to
consider how this presentation may be used personally
or professionally to help their clients enhance their
own religious or secular practices, and knowledge or
practice of Eastern religions is not necessary.
Treating Opioid Use Disorder in the
Era of Non-Prescribed Fentanyl
christopher l. peterson, do
In the 12 months leading up to April 2021, more than
100,000 drug overdose deaths occurred in the United
States-a 28% increase from the prior year-and it is
estimated more than 75% of these deaths were from
opioids. Medications for opioid use disorder including

methadone, buprenorphine, and XR-naltrexone are
associated with lower rates of overdose, mortality, and
drug use. These medications also improve retention
in treatment and quality of life. Notwithstanding this
therapy's evidence, barriers continue to exist for
patients. This presentation will discuss the barriers
patients face while accessing opioid use disorder
treatment as well as the social, psychological, and
biologic interventions that overcome these barriers
and improve retention. Particular attention will be given
to update participants on novel advances made in
recent years including buprenorphine microinductions,
integrated interdisciplinary models, low threshold
treatment approaches, and alternative treatment
initiation settings (primary care, emergency room,
syringe service programs, and telehealth).

Cannabis Use Disorder Treatment:
Engaging the Client and
Clinical Strategies
tanya l. gouveia,
ms, mpa, lcdp-ii, ladc-i
With the global view and belief system that
cannabis products are safe and medicinal, it has
made treatment of substance use disorders more
challenging. This training will focus on how to
engage the client with a substance use disorder
diagnosis and are either still using cannabis or have
an intention of returning to cannabis use after they
have completed their obligations for abstinence.
Participants will be given recent statistics,
demographics, and trends of current usage. They
will also be given clinical strategies and examples
of effective engagement to help the clients better
understand their substance use disorders, mental
health, medical conditions, intention of use, and how
cannabis may exacerbate these conditions.
