understand themselves, ultimately strengthening
the therapeutic alliance and allowing for agile and
truly personalized care planning. Participants will be
provided with recommendations on which psychometrically
validated instruments can be used to build out
a comprehensive measurement-based care program.
Further, attendees will learn how to aggregate a collection
of measures to understand overall patient health
status and compare this data to other patients, thereby
attending that minority of patients who likely demand
the majority of treatment teams' attention at any given
time. Finally, attendees will be provided with skills as to
how to utilize this data in patient care and with external
stakeholders-disparate groups who are invested in
the patient's status but are typically not behavioral
health experts themselves. Suggestions for scripting
and verbiage will be shared and taught.
Ethical Considerations and Implications
of Addressing and Treating
Substance Use During Pregnancy

Currently, 24 states and the District of Columbia
consider substance use during pregnancy as
child abuse and three states legally uphold civil
commitment. Half of the states require healthcare
professionals to report suspected substance
use during pregnancy and eight states require
mandatory drug testing for suspected substance
use during pregnancy. Yet only 19 states provide
substance use treatment for pregnant women. The
opioid epidemic has resulted in a 4x increase in the
number of pregnant women delivering with opioid
use disorder from 1999 to 2014 and a 7x increase in
babies experiencing neonatal abstinence syndrome
from 2000 to 2014. These policies and statistics raise
significant ethical considerations for the healthcare
provider that impact the mother and baby. The four
principles of ethics including beneficence, nonmaleficence,
autonomy, and justice will be explored
from the lens of a healthcare provider. Participants
will gain a deeper understanding of the potential
conflicting principles and how it can guide decisions
when faced with a pregnant woman using substances.
We will be discussing the ethical principles and
challenges impacting care of a pregnant woman
using substances and determining how a clinician
can support and demonstrate autonomy of the
pregnant patient.
The Integration of Spirituality
and Psychotherapy
Jack h. perkins, dmin, ladc, csac, cclc
Spirituality is an important aspect in the lives of clients
we serve; however, many professionals lack adequate
training to effectively and ethically integrate spirituality
within holistic care. Research validates the positive role
of spirituality, when integrated with other modalities of
services provided. It is associated with " a variety of adjustment
indicators including lower levels of depression and
alcohol consumption, fewer somatic complaints, fewer
interpersonal problems, lower mortality, and greater
levels of life satisfaction, more use of social supports ,and
overall coping ability " (Meichenbaum, 2008). Research
demonstrates the need, from an ethical, multicultural,
and holistic perspective, for healthcare providers to
integrate spirituality into their clinical practice within the
scope of evidence-based practices. Documentation of
spirituality assessments and implementation of spirituality
in treatment is required by the professional standards of
JCAHO and CARF. The presenter will demonstrate the
efficacy of integration spirituality and equip participants

with resources for assessments and treatment planning.
Attendees will gain an understanding of support from
their respective accreditation agency related to the
inclusion of spirituality from an ethical perspective. They
will gain an understanding of the unique role of spirituality
when studying well-being from a holistic perspective.
The presenter will demonstrate the efficacy of integrating
spirituality and equip participants with resources for
assessments and treatment planning.
The Somatic Approach to Healing
david a. cato, lcsw, tct, sep, cctp-ii
Trauma therapy is evolving. As a result of this, there
are many modalities that can address various mental
health and substance use disorders. Many of these
modalities are somatic, or body-focused. Trauma and
attachment are at the forefront of these issues and
must be addressed, as symptoms can be exacerbated
otherwise. Most therapeutic modalities use
top-down approaches for symptom management.
Bottom-up somatic approaches work with the
nervous and attachment systems to resolve trauma,
so symptoms diminish. Trauma survivors feel unsafe
long after experiencing trauma, even when no threat
is present. This approach provides a sense of safety
for clients and increases resilience. This is achieved
by accessing the primal ability of the nervous system
to detect and protect from threat. Join me in this
presentation geared toward advanced trauma
healing and moving away from traditional types of
therapy that miss the mark on processing trauma that
gets locked in the body. Exercises taught that can be
used in practice are orienting to the environment,
noticing the felt sense, kind eyes, building a tribe,
and others. This also addresses the physiology and
provides attendees with the ability to support individuals
to process through self-protective responses
that get stored in the body as a means of safety.
