All three goals and the supporting strategies are equally
important. However, those who know me will understand that I
am particularly excited about advancing use of technology by the
Bar Association towards ensuring continued financial stability
and effective operations of the Association. So, this year, BCBA
is embarking on replacing its aging website with a responsive
website allowing greater membership control, enhanced online
Lawyer Referral services, Spanish-language support, and
expanded non-dues revenue, which will meet our needs now and
for many years. This will be a major undertaking that will be tied
to an upgrade of our Association's back-end office systems. Just
as the members are the hub of our Association, the membership
list is the hub of our Association's software and website. The new
website should benefit the public, bar staff, and our members from
the moment it launches and for years to come.
In addition to the new website, the computer hardware at
the Bar Association is due for replacement. Therefore, we are
preparing to refresh our server, desktop computers and related
infrastructure. These are long-term investments for the benefit of
our Association so that we may fulfill our mission.
As we begin a new year, I think it's appropriate to remind
ourselves of what exactly our mission is because it guides every
decision we make. Specifically, the mission of the Berks County
Bar Association is to support the legal profession by promoting

professional excellence, encouraging collegiality and exercising
advocacy on its behalf. The Association also strives to support
the community by publishing the Berks County Law Journal,
providing educational programs for the public, assuring access
to justice and protecting the integrity of the legal system in
Berks County.
There is no doubt that we begin 2019 facing serious, but
not insurmountable challenges, to fulfilling our mission. A
stronger economy with fewer Sheriff 's sales has caused Law
Journal revenues to slide. The public is using online search
engines to find lawyers, resulting in fewer clients utilizing our
Lawyer Referral Service. Yet our organization remains vibrant.
Our membership remains engaged and committed to building
a stronger Association, and I remain optimistic about 2019 and
the years to come. The immediate past leadership, especially
Don Smith and Joan London, have us well-positioned for
success as we explore new opportunities. We are also fortunate
to have capable and enthusiastic future leaders, beginning
with President-Elect Eden Bucher and Vice President Justin
Bodor. For now, I ask for your support and commitment,
as members of the Berks County Bar Association, as we
work together to fulfill our mission and contribute to our
community. I look forward to working with each of you as we
forge ahead into 2019!
