By William W. Runyeon
Where the stone speaks to the artist,
where the wood calls to the artisan,
the form shines clear as the sun at high noon.
There is something more to the effort
than expression of self; a concept, or
a fist full of them, flowers of the lady's
self expression, delightfully, and
regularly, altering expectation,
with foibles endearing, skills and poise;
class consciousness among the audience,
subsumed, at least for the performance,
by pretty dresses, flowers and rising
awareness, sweet flower of heaven, that
she can do it. The lady, as it were,
grew in place. The wooden boy, like Ulysses,
more like Don Quixote, lives a life
in motion, of misadventures, unkindness
to those who love him, suffering by the
cruel hand of fate, like his loved ones, until,
until, something changed, the blue fairy,
sister mother; Geppeto, artisan father;
where the boy gives away what little he has
for them, finds a heart, and finds a life,
in coming to life. Any truth to
the boy's dream, to the lady's coming of age,
comes with the flowers, and the rain, after
the clouds have come upon the mountains,
and drenched the land; after the farmer has
paid the boy for honest work, so the fairy
that watches over him could be cared for,
and we all could know, even a little
after the performance, that everyone
will have that moment to believe they all
lived happily ever after; never,
never, to lose entirely the achievement,
and life of that moment, when all is well.
