Thumbs Up in Cuba!

n November 29, 2016, twenty Americans, including 8 of us
from Berks County, set foot in Cuba for a "people to people
cultural exchange." Our trip was organized through the
Overseas Adventure Travel which specializes in making travel something
more than simply a vacation. Education and cultural experiences are the
hallmark of the organization. My wife, Patricia Giles, and I have gone
to Patagonia, Australia and New Zealand previously through Overseas
Adventure along with our Berks County friends, Joni and Dave Naugle,
Larry and Cindi Fisher and Franki Aitken. Unfortunately, Franki
couldn't make this trip, but two more Berks Countians, June Clougher
and Ed Povilaitis, joined our group for this trip.
We arrived in Camquey, Cuba with the Country in a state of
mourning since four days before our arrival Fidel Castro had died.
Dancing, music and alcohol were banned during the first portion of our
trip while the official period of mourning was observed. Fortunately,
our hotel bars did not impose the drinking ban on us since we weren't
Cubans.

Bizarre Economics
Trying to describe Cuba to an American is difficult because it is a
country mired in a past that you would find hard to believe still exists.
Yet, through capitalism, the country is in the process of transitioning into
a more modern society. But this transition is not without problems.
