Welcome New Member
Angela Au Barbera, MD

D

r. Angela Barbera is a board-certified
ophthalmologist whose specialty is
the medical and surgical treatment of
diseases of the retina and vitreous. She joined
Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania in January
2021. Dr. Barbera completed her undergraduate
and medical degrees through the 6-year BS/MD
program between Penn State University and
Jefferson Medical College. After an internship
year at Crozer-Chester Medical Center, she
underwent residency training in ophthalmology
at Temple University Hospital. At Temple she
was named Chief Resident in her final year. She
completed her training with a fellowship in
vitreo-retinal surgery at Albany Medical Center/
Retina Consultants.

As part of a multispecialty team of 13
ophthalmologists and 9 optometrists, there is
an amazing amount of collegiality and expertise
within our group. I am particularly excited for
the camaraderie that comes with working with
the other retina specialists in our group.

Prior to joining Eye Consultants, Dr.
Barbera held a number of positions in both
private practice and academic institutions.
Her academic appointments included serving
as Program Director of the ophthalmology
residency at Temple University Hospital and as
Assistant Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology
at Albany Medical Center and at the Lewis Katz
School of Medicine at Temple University.

If you could change one thing
about the current practice
environment, what would it be?

The Berks County Medical Society thanks
Dr. Barbera for her support and welcomes her
to our community. To get to know her a little
better, we asked her to respond to the following
questions:

Describe the focus of your
practice and any areas of special
interest/expertise.
I am an ophthalmologist specializing in the
medical and surgical treatment of diseases of the
retina. The most common conditions that I treat
are macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy,
and retinal tears/detachments.

Why did you decide to practice
medicine in Berks County?
I came to Berks County for the opportunity
to practice with Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania.

What do you like best about
practicing medicine?
My favorite part about practicing medicine
is developing long-term relationships with my
patients. Patients receiving anti-VEGF injections
for wet macular degeneration or diabetic macular
edema typically start out coming in every month
for treatment. I enjoy both seeing their progress
every month and learning about their lives.

Without a doubt, I would love to have less
charting and computer work to do. I am sure I
am not alone in feeling that way!

Are you involved in any nonprofit/
community groups at this time?
I am not yet involved in any nonprofit or
community groups, but I look forward to future
volunteer opportunities in Berks County. When
my children are older, I would also love to be
involved in international ophthalmology mission
trips.

Please tell us a little about your
family and the activities you
enjoy outside of work.
I have lived in the Greater Philadelphia area
my entire life. My husband and I have been
married for six years and we have two beautiful
children. In my free time, I enjoy spending time
with my family, traveling, trying new restaurants,
cooking, and playing board games.
