A Shared Vision

O

ne of the most important things parents can provide
to children are the necessary tools to achieve their
own success. When a child is diagnosed with a visual
impairment, like VisionCorps' clients Joe and Millad, these
tools become exponentially more important to obtain. During
a seemingly dark time, a team of ophthalmologists, low vision
occupational therapists, and other physicians can create a world
of difference in achieving personal success.

"A Miracle in the Making"
Three years ago, Joe's family was told he would never
overcome the impact of a cardiac event. Today, Joe's tenacious
spirit and dedication to his rehabilitation have brought him miles
away from his diagnosed alternative.
Giuseppe, Joe's father, writes to a VisionCorps team member,
"My son's visit to his ophthalmologist, Dr. Madhura Tamhankar,
was both inspirational and insightful. Because Joe had learned
just two years ago that he would never see again, it shocked and
surprised both Dr. Tamhankar and her staff when his vision
improved."
Kathy, Joe's mother, cried as she recalled Joe's coma and
his amazing uphill battle. Pushing himself to succeed with the
support of a dedicated team, Joe now works independently and
enjoys everyday hobbies.

Support for Every Step of the Journey
Through the support of VisionCorps, Joe's family set up
the home for Joe's orientation and mobility ease. Occupational
therapists worked with Joe on contrasts relative to his vision,
helped him discover books on tape, and introduced the use of
other low vision aids. Joe also attended support group through
VisionCorps, where he connected with other individuals who are
visually impaired.
Dr. Tamhankar, of Sheie Eye Institute, now plans to provide
information on VisionCorps' services to all patients in hopes of
improving their quality of life.
