exceptions of course, as wealthier citizens may have "imported"
stone from a quarry across the county such as the serpentine
green stone homes one can find throughout the county. Unless
the home is on a small portion of land around West Chester the
serpentine was moved to that site. Of interest, the only minable
quantities of building quality serpentine in the world, other than
in the Himalayas, is under a few thousand acres of land around
West Chester. Then came the Federal period with stately brick
buildings, followed by the Victorian period with the ornate

and "puffy" homes one sees in our county. The Victorians took
advantage of the wide variety of stone available here in Chester
County, as our county has some of the most complex geology in
the world. Granites, shales, serpentine, even marble and of course
the plentiful and beautiful limestone in the Central Chester Valley
were used by the builders. Scattered about one may see modern
(Frank Lloyd Wright-like) homes built in the 1920s to 50s. Then
came the post-World War II (think Levittown) neighborhoods and
now modern suburban colonials (yuk!, sorry my prejudice).

Kathryn Young Deaville expresses a keen
interest in the built environment in her oil
paintings. Having studied architecture at
Miami University, University of Pennsylvania
and the Architectural Association of London,
England, she has had a career as an architect
in both Cleveland, Ohio and Philadelphia, PA.
Now she uses canvas to interpret the unique
character of the buildings and streetscapes of
the Delaware Valley and beyond. Her paintings
express the play of light and shadow on the
architectural forms that make up our towns
and cities.

Ms. Deaville shows her artwork at
numerous local galleries and has earned
awards at several juried shows, including
awards at the 2012 West Chester CCAA Plein
Air Competition and the 2015 Brandywine
Valley Plein Air Show and Competition. She is
a board member of the Howard Pyle Studio
Group in Wilmington, DE and is a member
of the East Bradford Township Planning
Commission.
