Annual Meeting
T

he 2019 Annual Meetings of the Pennsylvania Medical
Society and its component sections were held the
weekend of October 25 - 27, 2019 at the Hershey Lodge
and Convention Center in Hershey, PA. The House of Delegates
is the state society's policy-making body, its made up of delegates
and alternate delegates from each of the county medical societies
and specialty associations throughout the state.

This year there was active discussion in regional caucuses, in
reference committee hearings and on the floor of the House of
Delegates. Some of the reports and resolutions addressed proposed
bylaws changes for the society, other topics included education
and science/public health; managed care and other third-party
reimbursement issues; tort reform, regulations and other proposed
legislation and membership/leadership and subsidiaries' reports.

Delegates reviewed and debated reports and resolutions
proposing specific policies for the organization(s) to pursue in
the coming year. On Friday evening October 25th the sections
held their annual meetings. These include the Students Section;
Residents/Fellow Section; the Early Career Physicians Section; the
International Medical Graduates Section and the newly created
Women's Section.

Some specific topics of discussion included: support
for safe (opioid) consumption sites; recreational marijuana;
restricting e-cigarette/vaping use; communications challenges
between community based physicians and hospital emergency
departments and inpatient care teams; prior authorization relief.
Other resolutions addressed: pharmaceutical pricing studies;
physician suffering; the need to repeal Act 112 of 2018; forming
a commission, council or committee to better address grass roots
political involvement; creating an appeals process for physicians in
the PHP and transparency of operations.

Dr. Lawrence John from Allegheny County was installed as
the PAMED President and Michael DellaVecchia (Philadelphia
County) ascended to the role of President Elect. Elections were
held to select a new Vice President, several District Trustees (Board
Members) and Delegates and Alternate Delegates to the American
Medical Association from Pennsylvania. In the Vice President's
race Dr. David Talenti from Wayne County was elected as the new
Vice President.
