ARTIST STATEMENT

Beauty alters the grain of reality.

My family is from Canada, and my mother had a very
British collection of porcelain teacups and figurines. This is
a cup from the china pattern she brought out for all of our
major holiday meals, and a lace doily she crocheted.

Portraying reality in artwork is tricky business. Like any
"realist," I am moved by reality and it is moved by me in
turn, as I paint. I have an eye for detail and my artwork
is inspired by the nuances of what I see. But the creative
process, from vision and initial planning to final product,
involves ongoing and deeply engaging problem-solving
and endless decision-making that has complexity far
beyond copying. It feels like magic to coax color, light
and form into an image that conveys a sense of space,
dimension and texture. Inescapably, that image always
contains me too.
Painting traditional subject matter, I find that people,
places and things each present me with challenges
that are both different and similar. In all cases, I try to
communicate some of the subject's inherent energy.
My approach is academic and intellectual, but my
involvement is emotional. I want my paintings to be
accessible, cohesive and harmonious, with a cooperative
relationship among the various elements. And I love
the feel of oil paints. My connection with the materials
themselves is visceral.
I paint because I love to do it. I see the world as full of
beautiful things, and I love the process of expressing my
visual enjoyment of life. I want to distill and share what
surprises and delights me about what I see.
