(Where is Spring?)

pring greetings to my colleagues and Journal readers and a few mother hen
reminders. Wash your hands and face often, use common sense and look out for
yourself and each other. Physicians, please continue to submit articles, essays or
letters to your journal: it is your publication to share knowledge and communicate with
your colleagues. The Chester County Medical Society has meetings six times a year,
the times and dates are on our website. All are welcome. Please join us! We plan to
continue the joint CCMS and Chester County Hospital Staff "discussion group-scrum
meetings" the last Thursday of each month at Community Volunteers in Medicine when
quarantining guidelines allow us. Again. we will post on the CCMS web site.

"Where is Spring?" A colleague of mine asked the first week in April. Alexa says
it started on March 19th, but it sure has not felt like it. And not just because of the
chilly and wet end to a rather warm and benign winter. It has been stolen in a sense, by
an exotic virus from a faraway land. There seems to have been none of the exuberant
preparations and anticipation of Easter week with family and friends. Nor the gleeful
banter of high school students preparing (or scheming as I remember) about the Prom
and graduation parties. No school musicals, or spring soccer, or NCAA lacrosse and
basketball finals. NO BASEBALL, even! We all have been robbed of our spring. Those
long winter months, "holed-up" in our homes with cabin fever and an evolving journey to
our collective "wit's ends." We were all eagerly awaiting the glorious relief of freedom and
renewal the change in season brings. Instead we all remained in the national "quarantine"
milieu, not meeting friends for dinner, or holding our grandchildren for the past 5 weeks.
Shackled to winter still, living in what seems to be a poorly written dystopian B movie.
But of course Spring really is here. We all saw the early yellow flowers of Chester
County, and now blooming trees and growing grass. I encourage myself, and each of us
to make the best of it. We can still walk (10 feet apart) the many, many parks and trails
of Chester County. Let us use this forced change in our daily life routine to adopt and be
resourceful, and most importantly selflessly share our lives and resources with our family,
friends, neighbors and co-workers.
Perhaps, and only perhaps, in the future years we will remember this Spring not
only for our shared grief of lost patients, but also fondly, for the wonderful people in our
community and our admirable response to this epidemic.
