ADDRESSING RACIAL AND ETHNIC

DISPARITIES IN HEALTH CARE

INTRODUCTION
The racial and ethnic disparities in the healthcare system of the United
States are well documented, and several strategies to eliminate them
have been proposed. Yet, healthcare disparities persist and worsen the
health status and health outcomes of people of color. As the racially and
ethnically diverse population rises, addressing healthcare disparities must
be a priority to prevent a public health crisis.
In our paper, we highlight some of the root causes of these healthcare
disparities with an emphasis on the contributing roles of structural racism,
and the history of exploitation and abuse on African Americans by the
medical field. Importantly, we provide tangible strategies that can be
implemented in the health and non-health sectors to achieve a more
health equitable nation.
