on Underrepresented Minorities

hile the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)
pandemic has impacted
everyone, underrepresented
minorities in the United States, including
Black and Latino people, are at a heightened
risk in terms of the biological, social, and
economic effects. In the medical community,
many professionals are aware on some level
of the social determinants of health (SDH)
that disproportionately affect the health of
Black people, often in the context of chronic

conditions, such as diabetes, obesity, hypertension, or respiratory disease. As a result,
there needs to be a comprehensive effort to
mitigate the impact of these SDH during
ongoing COVID-19-related public health
measures. The health inequities highlighted
by the COVID-19 pandemic need to be
addressed as we combat institutional racism.
While there is missing data in reporting
ethnicities of COVID-19 cases, the CDC
surveillance data from January 22nd to
