Recognize that, just as our learning of medicine never ends, being actively anti-racist never ends.
Embrace the likelihood that you will make mistakes, but that it is better to make a mistake and
learn from it than to stay silent.
o Please use the resources below as a starting point for learning more about systemic racism and
the experiences of historically marginalized populations.
Stand up against racism and intolerant attitudes:
o As Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo said himself, "Silence and inaction - you're
complicit." No one should be a bystander to racial injustice - actively listen and use your voice
to speak against racist actions, including those that originate from within your class.
o This is especially relevant during rotations and clerkships, when your fellow minority students are
frequently subjected to racist remarks and actions. If you witness or hear of this occurring, take a
stand and say something.
o We, as future healthcare professionals, should learn to advocate not only for our patients, but
also for one another.
Integrate topics of diversity into our education:
o If you are a member of a specialty interest group, we challenge you to organize a lunch lecture
that discusses topics of diversity as they apply to the specialty that your group represents.
o The diverse student groups will be asking the PSCOM administration for more formal education
regarding topics on racism, sexism, and other biases. Please raise your voices to stand in
solidarity with us.

Today and everyday, diverse student leaders pledge to take an unwavering stance against the systemic racism
that pervades the lives of our fellow Black colleagues and future patients. We urge every student at Penn State
College of Medicine to stand in solidarity and take this pledge with us. Start a conversation with someone new
in your class and share your pledge to engage in the action items above. Our student groups stand together in
recognizing that this is not simply an issue of the Black community, but an issue of human rights. And most
importantly, remember to uphold your pledge even after the momentum of recent events has passed. As future
physicians, we owe it to our colleagues, future patients, and ourselves to actively and continuously work on being
anti-racist.
