action. I was told that my grades had to
be significantly better and my research
and activities had to be more "robust" as
compared to minority students. I remember talking to my mother about it saying
(paraphrasing the Three Stooges); "Ma,
based on how the kids that are minorities
are doing in my classes, those bears don't
need no help." They were smart and were
smoking me on our exams.
intention. The idea behind taking the most
qualified person was to fit the job with the
individual regardless of race, religion, or
sexual orientation. Furthermore, it was to
put individuals in comfortable positions
based on ability to allow them to be the
most effective at their job. To create true
equality. Therefore, as a society, we should
focus on preparing all equally from an
early age for the career they desire.
After we paid our dues and went to
medical school, the truly negative effect
of the affirmative action initiative became
obvious; the minority students were looked
upon by a few as not belonging there. That
was until their abilities became obvious.
But, these talented, smart minorities did
not need the "help" or the "stigma." I
understand, that decades ago, to NOT
choose an equally qualified minority
because of race was wrong, but to elevate
a less qualified person was not anyone's
I feel that as physicians and leaders
of our community, we should treat ALL
physicians (and people) as equals. We are
equals in ability and education. And, let us
use terms identifying what we share and
not what makes us different. I want to be
known as a great anesthesiologist and not
a great "Italian" "male" anesthesiologist.
and environment. My other hope is that
this editorial is taken as it was intended,
that we are inherently equal, and what
we make of our lives is based on what we
desire to make of our lives.
As an addendum to my editorial, I
want to address the very thoughtful and
heartfelt joint statement from some of the
Hershey medical students dealing with
racism. They address police brutality. I
understand that it exists and is carried
out by a very, very small minority of our
law enforcement officers.
To those in the vast majority, thank you
for what you do including putting your
lives at risk to keep us safe.
So, my hope for the future of medicine
and of life is that we all are accepted as
contributors to our society regardless of
any visible differences based on genetics
