SAFE DEICING FOR CONCRETE
DRIVEWAYS, SIDEWALKS AND CURBS
Contributed by Pennsy Supply Inc., a Harrisburg-based supplier of construction materials

W

ith winter rapidly approaching, concrete driveways, curbs
and sidewalks are at risk of damage from salt and deicing
materials. Driveways are particularly at risk, because your car
picks up salt from the roads you drive on. When you stop in the
driveway, the salt hits the concrete and trouble begins.
We'd like to offer homeowners some thoughts and advice on maintaining and protecting exposed concrete surfaces around your home.
DO NOT use deicing salts, such as calcium chloride or sodium
chloride, on new or recently placed concrete. Use clean sand for
traction. NEVER use ammonium sulfate or ammonium nitrate as a
deicer. These are chemically aggressive and destroy concrete surfaces.
Poor drainage, which permits water and/or salts to stand on the
surface for extended periods of time, greatly increases the severity
of exposure and causes scaling. Light applications of salt can be
more damaging than heavy applications.
To properly maintain your concrete surfaces, Pennsy recommends
the following:
* A chemical sealer should be applied to all exposed surfaces one
time a year, just before cold weather arrives.
* After ice and snow have been cleared from the highways and
your car is no longer picking up salt residue, completely hose
down all exposed surfaces.
* Remove ice and snow from exposed concrete surfaces as soon
as possible. Ice and snow will cause pitting, particularly on
Northern elevations.
Central Pennsylvania experiences many cycles of freeze-thaw
days throughout a typical winter. Maintenance on your concrete
surfaces is just as important as maintenance on your furnace and
air conditioning.

We also recommend that, if you are replacing a concrete driveway
or sidewalk or adding a new one, you consider using an internal
sealer that is added and mixed into concrete at the plant, then placed
like regular concrete.
Pennsy has partnered with a supplier to bring our customers the
PENNGUARD internal sealer, which protects the surface of the
concrete and keeps water from penetrating it, making it far more
long-lasting and durable.
