Embracing the Role of Underdogs ...
To the Relentless Pursuit of Victory
February. The Eagles defeated the Patriots for their first Super
Bowl victory in franchise history after a non-stop, offensiveoriented, fourth-quarter battle. For Philadelphia fans, the game
brought the city its first championship in 10 years, when the
Phillies last won the World Series. It also marked the Eagles' first
victory on the sport's biggest stage after losses in 1980 and 2005.
Entering the game, they were one of 13 NFL franchises that had
never won a championship.
The Patriots were 4.5-point favorites heading into the game.
The Eagles have been underdogs in every game they've played
this year, including their two playoff victories against the Atlanta
Falcons and Minnesota Vikings. It was the Patriots' third Super
Bowl appearance in the last four years.

Just a few weeks after the play was run on the field, the
Philadelphia Eagles filed a trademark application with the
U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to register the
mark "Philly Special," in reference to the important trick play
in the Super Bowl. The Eagles were not the first to have the
trademark idea and file for protection. The Eagles are in line
behind eight other groups, including people from various states
and the Pennsylvania brewing company Yuengling. The Eagles
have a slight advantage, though. They have already used the
phrase (everyone else is filing for "intent to use"), and, well,
they are the ones who created the play and ran it on the field.
Registration in the U.S. could also be used to obtain
registration in foreign countries, which the Eagles might be
interested in, considering the far reach of Super Bowl coverage
and the potential of streams of revenue related to "Philly
Special" outside of the U.S. *

Etched in the mind of every Philadelphia
sports fan!
The Philly Special was a trick play between Philadelphia
Eagles players Corey Clement, Trey Burton and Nick Foles
on fourth-down-and-goal in Super Bowl LII. On the play,
quarterback Foles moved up to behind his offensive line and the
ball was directly snapped to running back Clement. Clement went
on to pitch the ball to tight end Burton, who passed the ball to a
wide-open Foles for the touchdown; Foles thereby became the
first player in Super Bowl history to both throw for and catch a
touchdown.
Eagles coach Doug Pederson's decision to go for a touchdown
rather than attempt a field goal on the play helped put the Eagles
in a better position to defeat the New England Patriots 41-33,
and subsequently win Super Bowl LII. Many analysts have since
called the play one of the gutsiest play-calls in Super
Bowl history.
