LASP ... GRANTS INCREASE HELP FOR
FORECLOSURE EFFORTS
Legal Aid of Southeastern PA (LASP) is now able to help
more Delaware County residents save their homes through a
program funded by the Pennsylvania Interest on Lawyers Trust
Account (IOLTA). With this funding, LASP is able to pay for two
regional home ownership preservation attorneys and a paralegal.
One of the attorneys, Christina Drzal, is based in Delaware
County.
These new positions mean that LASP can take on more
cases for people facing foreclosure, tax sale, predatory loan or
other home ownership problems. In some cases, LASP can help
a senior or other homeowner avoid foreclosure by setting up
repayment agreements. In others, LASP is able to help with quiet
title actions, allowing people to sell their homes or assume or
qualify for a mortgage.
Ms. Drzal, based in LASP's Chester City office, now provides
extended representation to more people who face losing their
homes. In a recently completed case, LASP helped a county
resident save her home of more than 30 years. And when a
home cannot be saved, LASP often can help in other ways. For
example, David Jonas, the other home ownership preservation
attorney, recently negotiated "Cash for Keys" settlements for
several county residents in which borrowers who had to leave
their homes received a cash settlement to cover relocation costs.
The IOLTA zone grant is funded by the 2014 Bank of America
settlement, stemming from its mortgage lending work. The
settlement monies went to the state attorney general's office and
are being administered by the Pennsylvania IOLTA program.
For more information, please contact Christina Drzal at 610874-8421 x315 or cdrazal@lasp.org.
