true crime novels authored by Brandt, he
co-authored Donny Brasco: Unfinished
Business (pub. 2008) with Joe Pistone,
the DCBA's keynote speaker at the 43rd
Annual Bench Bar Conference in 2015.
The book offers shocking declassified
details from the FBI's greatest undercover
operation and a time line of the fall of the
Mafia.
Born and raised in New York City,
Charles Brandt is the grandson of Italian
immigrants, Rosa and Luigi DiMarco,
who had a small family farm in Staten
Island.
Brandt graduated from Stuyvesant
High School in 1959, and then in 1963,
he graduated from the University of
Delaware. He became a junior high
English teacher in Queens, then a Welfare investigator in East
Harlem.
On graduation from Brooklyn Law School in 1969, Brandt
moved to Delaware and worked as a homicide investigator and
later, a prosecutor. Adept at interrogation, Brandt was eventually
promoted to Chief Deputy Attorney General of the State of
Delaware, his state's second highest law enforcement officer.
Brandt had four men on death row when he left the office.
In private legal practice since 1976, Brandt, at first, defended
the major homicides of his state. He later restricted his practice
to plaintiff's medical malpractice and the cross-examination of
medical defense experts, such as neurosurgeons. These cases
often involved the investigation of wrongful death, another form
of homicide.
Brandt was named by his trial lawyer peers as one of the
" Best Lawyers in America " and one of the " Best Lawyers in
Delaware. " Brandt was elected president of the Delaware Trial
Lawyers Association and the Delaware Chapter of the American
Board of Trial Advocates. During his career he taught crossexamination
to other trial lawyers and interrogation techniques
to police officers. *
