A Virtual Exchange
of the Gavel, 2021
An Association bound by a common purpose,
and more united than ever!
The DCBA was unable to hold
its Annual Dinner this year due
to COVID concerns. Outgoing
President, Robert F. Kelly, Jr., and
incoming President, Karen E. Friel,
participated in a " virtual " gavel
exchange on January 8, 2021.
MISSION STATEMENT
The Delaware County Bar Association
exists to serve its members and the
community at large by fostering
respect for the law, by advancing
the competent, collegial, and ethical
practice of the legal profession, and by
creating opportunities for attorneys,
judges, and the public to work
collaboratively for justice.
Robert F. Kelly, Jr., Esquire, President of the
Delaware County Bar Association, 2020.
It has been my great honor to have had the opportunity
to serve as the 85th president of this great association. I am
privileged to have been part of a tradition that dates back to
1872.
I stood before you in January 2020, as many before me had
done, making promises to you of what I would accomplish over
my term, secure in the knowledge that this well-run organization
would thrive, in spite of me.
My primary intent when I began my presidency, was to see
that the mission of the Association was served. Who on earth
could have foreseen the unprecedented events that would befall
us just two months thereafter?
In spite of the hurdles of the past year, we all rose to the
challenge; we have been able to sustain the organization through
adversity. To the extent that we improved upon the longstanding

tradition of excellence of this
Association, it was perhaps to help
bring to light, and strengthen the
loyalty, the talent and the selflessness
of the Association's staff and
members.
I stand proud to be associated
with such dedicated and selfless
people. We are all blessed to be part
of an association whose members
are united in seeing that the mission
of the DCBA is fulfilled and that
the association stays faithful to that
mission.
I thank the many officers,
members and staff of the DCBA,
whose tireless efforts and sacrifices,
whose gifts of time and talent, have
ensured the survival of this association and its greatness through
this difficult time. I thank President Judge Kelly and the Board
of Judges for the support that you provide to the Association,
especially for your continued interest in helping the association
fulfill its mission.
We find ourselves an Association bound by a common
purpose, and more united than ever; and while this crisis has
curtailed our opportunities for social gatherings, it has not
diminished our sense of comradery.
I congratulate Karen Friel on her becoming the 86th president
of the DCBA; she is a dynamic and diligent person and our
Association is in excellent hands with her at the helm.
Karen E. Friel, Esquire, President of the
Delaware County Bar Association, 2021.
I first and foremost want to thank Bob Kelly for his
challenging year as President of the Bar Association.
Unfortunately, he did not have the opportunity to enjoy the
many highlights he should have experienced in person. Without
