Taking action

The Borough of Hamburg was the first community in the state of Pennsylvania to be certified as a
Wildlife Habitat Community by the National Wildlife
Federation. To receive community designation, fifty
or more property owners within the Borough were
required to become individually certified. To obtain
individual certification the property owners needed
to meet four conditions: provide food such as nectar,
seeds, and berries or a supplemental feeder; provide
cover from bad weather and predators; offer an available source of drinking water; and provide a place to
raise young.
Since receiving certification in 2006, the Native Wildlife Habitat
Committee has implemented several projects and programs to fulfill
their mission of encouraging more people to certify their gardens
through the National Wildlife Federation, along with educating
homeowners about the use of native plants.
In June the committee organized and hosted its 8th annual Garden
Tour with record crowds participating. During this self-guided
driving tour, participants visited numerous gardens featuring flower
gardens, aquaponic gardens, rain barrel collections, herb and vegetable
gardens, raised beds, pollinator gardens, and marshland gardens -
all featuring plants native to the area. One of the highlights of this
year's tour was a sculpture garden displaying unique works of art
by Bill Rhodes, including a large dinosaur sculpture. Bill uses his
welding skills to transform recycled materials into art. In addition
to viewing the gardens, tour goers were educated on composting,
rain water collecting, and how to incorporate native plantings in
their own gardens.
