Anne's comments on urgent care are "I absolutely love this; I still

For Brian Jones, another long-term traditional family medicine

to urgent care, Brian had transitioned into doing part-time EMR
design. When he started to feel unfulfilled with that, he wanted to
do something different. His enjoyment of doing procedures and the
unencumbered free time, which allows him and his wife to travel,

One common thread was the comment by newly graduated
family practitioner Elom Amoussou-Kpeto, "I hate paperwork!" The
chance to simplify life and escape the frustration of full inboxes and
the proverbial forms that need to be "filled out" was echoed by all.

For Elom, who moved here to be with his fiancée, it was the hatred
of paperwork and the opportunity to continue to do the aspects of
care that he always liked-such as sports medicine, suturing, and
procedures that led him to choose urgent care.
So what qualities make a good urgent care doctor? The ability to
think on your feet, work at a quick pace, have confidence in your
abilities (including knowing when a patient's problems are beyond
your scope), and the enjoyment of doing procedures come to mind.
A desire to work with and mentor aligned providers, such as physician assistants and medical assistants, is key as urgent care demands
strong teamwork.
A strong positive and sympathetic regard for patients and compassion for their concerns and anxieties over things that sometimes
seem minor to us but important to them are essential. Also necessary
is the willingness to embrace your important role in the health care
system. By helping the less ill patients get excellent timely care at an
appropriate cost in a setting that utilizes resources efficiently, you save
room in the ED for the more critically ill to get care. Meeting the
needs of patients who clearly want the convenience of on-demand
care, you simultaneously help the often-overwhelmed primary care
offices manage the acute care needs of their patients.
