What is

UROGYNECOLOGY
and how can it help?

U

rogynecology. It's a complicated word, but it covers
common conditions that affect a wide range of patients.

"Urogynecology is really an overlap of gynecology
and urology," said Lauren B. Westermann, DO, of
Lancaster General Health Physicians Urogynecology & Pelvic
Reconstructive Surgery. "It has aspects of both specialties."
Dr. Westermann, John J. Navas M.D., and Jamie Knarr, CRNP,
treat women with conditions ranging from overactive bladder to
pelvic organ prolapse, recurrent urinary tract infections, urinary
incontinence, fecal incontinence, and more at LGHP Urogynecology & Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery at the LG Health/Penn
Medicine's Women's Specialty Center in Lancaster. Usually,
patients come to their practice after seeing their primary-care
provider or gynocologist (although some have self-referred, as well).
Pelvic floor disorders affect more than 25 percent of women
in the United States, impacting women in all stages of life. Frequency of the disorders increases with age.
Often, urogynecologists help diagnose conditions that may
first present as something else.
"For example, bladder pain syndrome is sometimes initially
treated as a UTI, and the patient is given antibiotics, but the
symptoms continue," Dr. Navas explained. "That's when a patient
might be referred to us for further evaluation."
Increasing awareness of pelvic floor disorders can go a long
way toward increasing provider referrals for patients who could
benefit from the services.
