where you are traveling, such a trip might already increase one's
risk of infection, regardless of a cancer diagnosis. Busy, crowded
places such as airport terminals and bus stations can increase
the chance of catching an illness by contacting an infected person or something that they have had contact with. Some more
region-specific considerations may include water/food-borne
illness or diseases spread by insects. Travelers headed to some
destinations are recommended to receive vaccinations against
diseases that are not necessarily a threat in the United States. For
some people with compromised immune systems, these vaccines
may not effectively produce the desired immunity or may even
be unable to be administered depending on the type of vaccine.5
It is important to consult with a travel medicine specialist and/
or an infectious disease specialist for overseas travel to develop
an appropriate strategy.

In summary, there are a wide variety of factors to consider
when deciding if it is reasonable to travel after receiving a
cancer diagnosis. Although the information provided here may
help inform some of your questions and thinking, there really is
no substitute for an open discussion with your physicians who
understand your unique circumstances and condition.
