Letter from the president
I
t is with great pleasure I introduce you to this new issue of Philadelphia
Medicine. Philadelphia is home to some of the giants of modern
medicine. Our cover story is a profile of one such giant, Dr. Luther
Brady. Dr. Brady is one of the pioneers in radiation oncology since its inception over
70 years ago. He remains vibrant and inquisitive in exploring new ways radiation
oncology might serve to battle and cure cancers. A true Renaissance man, he is an
avid art collector, and has been instrumental in promoting some of the most gifted
artists and musicians of our day.

We continue to recognize the gender inequities in medicine. One enormous
inequity is in salaries. Dr. Sherry Blumenthal, chair of the Women Physicians Caucus,
addressed the medical students of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital on this and
wrote a commentary.
Alan Miceli, our editor, gives a
very personal account of three young
people who became addicted to drugs
and their struggles in trying to stop
and stay off drugs. He adds insight
from several local experts in addiction
counseling and on what it takes to
break an addiction.
