Hope exists for future of
private-practice physicians
By David A. Kostival, Contributing Writer
O
nce part of small town Americana, the private practice doctor's office was as
common as the corner hardware store and the local pharmacy.
But just as the latter two have almost disappeared because of big box retailers,
many independent doctors have given up their practices to large health care systems.
Earlier this year, the American Medical Association released results of a survey of
3,500 U.S. physicians revealing the share of private practices had dropped below 50%
for the first time since the study began in 2012.
The data showed 49.1% of doctors worked in private practices, which was down
5% from 2018.
Dr. Jaan Sidorov recognizes the statistics, but believes there may be some indications
the trend is flattening.
Sidorov has worked for large health care systems and has also been involved as a
start-up entrepreneur in both profit and nonprofit settings.
He is the former CEO for the PA Clinical Network, a subsidiary of the PennsylDr.

According to the network's website (www.bit.ly/PAClinical1), Sidorov is a board-certified
general internal medicine physician with more than 25 years of experience in
primary care, inpatient care, medical education and evidence-based practice. Jaan
believes physician leadership throughout the continuum of care is the bedrock of
value-based care delivery, according to the website.
Independent doctors
The network is made up of independent doctors who work together and share
best practices for the purpose of delivering high-quality, cost-effective health care.
" I think there is a decline, but the rate of decline is slowing down, " Sidorov said.
" Some markets have seen physicians drop out, but in the rural and suburban areas,
there are still a lot of private practice physicians out there. "
Sidorov said that as CEO of the PA Clinical Network, he signed up approximately
200 providers and negotiated seven commercial insurer contracts for more than
58,000 patients.
