recent non-pandemic year, there was a 56.9% increase in the
nonfatal victims of gun violence from 2019 to 2020 and a
37.6% increase in fatal victims.

Ortiz-Torrent said it is important to identify and encourage
people to get help.
" People don't like the idea of seeing a psychiatrist, but
they can always see a counselor, therapist or a representative
of their faith, " Ortiz-Torrent said.
Ortiz-Torrent also said that hospitals should increase mental
health services to provide teams to address psychiatric patients.
With increased violence, medical professionals face added
pressures of their own.
" Many physicians are burned out, and there has to be a way
in which we can deal with the pressures, " Ortiz-Torrent said.
" We should have a way in which we reconnect as colleagues so
that we don't feel alone. We have to be professionals working
together to take care of patients and each other. "
Confronted with victim
Dr. Makoto Tanigawa, a second-year resident at Jefferson
University Hospital, said a medical team can experience a
little bit more of an adrenaline rush when confronted with
the victim of a shooting.
" Everyone deals with it in a different way, " Tanigawa said.
" For some, it's hard seeing young people getting shot.
" Whenever we run a shooting (the medical team attending
to a victim), we make sure we are all OK. We also make sure,
after the shift, that everyone on the team is OK. "
From a resident's perspective, dealing with trauma " is like
an algorithm, " he said. " We do a primary assessment, making
sure all life-threats are taken care of. In a secondary assessment,
there is a head-to-toe examination to identify (bullet) entry
and exit wounds and not miss any injuries. "
