A SPIRITED AND SOMETIMES PAINFUL DEBATE ON OPIODS
I, for one, have a stance that opiate prescription is rampant
and needs to be curbed and replaced with alternate treatment
options. For this debate, I was on the team that argued the exact
opposite of my view on the issue. In order to successfully debate,
I had to put my world view on hold, and embrace the opposition
to better give myself a chance at winning the debate. In doing
so, I came across new ideas and perspectives. Perhaps, opiates
are inherently the cause of the epidemic but it is the method in
which they are employed. Perhaps physicians and pharmacists
are not sufficiently trained to maximize the therapeutic effects
of opiates while taking active measures to minimize the potential
harms. There I was debating Drexel, which was defending my
Sneak Peek: Building 2000
personal perspective on the matter. In a way, I was playing devil's
advocate, and it allowed me to see much deeper into the matter.
