Philadelphia Medicine : Summer 2017

t's hard to believe that this is actually my last letter for our magazine.
This final issue under my tenure is packed with interesting stories
that you will not find in the same detail anywhere else.

Dr. Michael DellaVecchia gives an extensive
report on the Philadelphia Opioid Task Force, that
has just completed its work. The numbers spewing
out of this epidemic are staggering. During just
a five-day period last November, there were 35
people in the city killed by heroin overdose. Dr.
DellaVecchia, who is a member of the task force,
lists the group's recommendations. They include
expansion of treatment facilities, and the addition
of more safe housing and vocational support.
In our last issue we offered a description of the Craniofacial Program Portrait Project,
an effort to help young plastic surgery patients gain emotional healing through portraits
of themselves rendered by artists at Philadelphia's Studio Incamminati. The program is
just one of the many projects which grew out of the Center of Human Appearance (CHA)
at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center. Dr. Linton Whitaker, the founder
and director of CHA, explains how its unique interdisciplinary team of surgeons and
psychologists is helping children and adult plastic surgery patients heal in body and mind.
Since President Johnson's War on Poverty, the city of Philadelphia has been trying to
ease the suffering of those near or below the poverty line by offering solid medical care
at its health centers. Doctors Susan Robbins and Walter Tsou describe the evolution of
the centers into the basic care facilities they are now, treating more than 300,000 city
residents a year.
We also offer a look at one of the most dynamic
behavioral health programs in the city - the Devereux
Advanced Behavioral Health program. Helena
Devereux's dream of caring for children with special
needs has grown from a small facility in South
Philadelphia, to a national non-profit partner for
individuals, families, schools and communities. It's
dedicated to serving many of the most vulnerable
members of our society in the areas of autism,
intellectual and developmental disabilities, specialty
mental health, and child welfare.
