"I missed having that sense of purpose and responsibility that
I had overseas."
His difficulties in returning to civilian life are all too
common. Each day about 20 veterans commit suicide, a rate
that is one-and-a-half times higher than Americans who have
not served in the military. Our article by editor Alan Miceli
reports on what experts at the summit believe are the core
issues involving this painful problem and ways they believe we
can confront it.
A significant part of our calling here at PCMS is to inspire
the next generation of physicians to be the best that they can
be, but we often find that we end up being inspired by them.
Ashley Garcia is a case in point. The class of 2020 MD candidate
at Drexel University College of Medicine somehow found time
between her studies and other medical school responsibilities
to take part in the most recent American Medical Association
Annual House of Delegates Conference. In her report on the
conference in this issue, she describes the effort by her and other
students to get a resolution passed that called on transparency
by the Department of Defense when it comes to the cutting of
17,000 health care providers.
These are just a few of the stories we're telling in this issue
