Permut said the practice of medicine, not only in Philadelphia,
but throughout the U.S., has changed. Many practices are being
acquired by health systems and in some cases by health insurers.
Many physicians end up leaving their residency, and in the past
they would think of going into private practice or joining a private
practice, Permut said.
" Today, many of them are joining health systems, " he said. " The
needs of those physicians may be very unique from those in private
practice. We want to see what we can do for those physicians as well. "
Membership challenges
Philadelphia County Medical Society, Permut said, " is trying
to do the best job.
" As you probably know, memberships in general, in everything,
from churches to bowling leagues to organized medicine, have
declined dramatically over the last 20 or 30 years, " he said. " What
we'd like to do, what I'd like to do is create a sense among physicians
of making organized medicine kind of part of their DNA. One of
the ways the PCMS does that already is to recruit as many medical
students into the PCMS as possible, so through medical school,
they can appreciate the benefits of belonging to or participating in
organized medicine.
" We've been doing that and we will continue to make sure that
organized medicine is meeting the needs of physicians across the
spectrum. "
Permut said he sees an important role for students who are finding
their way into practices.
" We want to let them know that their opinions on creating health
