We applaud health systems
that require workers to get
the COVID vaccine

Is a COVID-19 vaccine mandate a good idea?
Here's another question: Should people working in an environment
surrounded by patients at high risk of getting extremely sick
and dying have any ethical obligation to be vaccinated?
We learned in early June that employers such as hospitals can
legally require COVID-19 vaccination for the staff to reenter the
workplace. They can also provide incentives to encourage them
to get the COVID-19 vaccination, according to those new Equal
Employment Opportunity Commission guidelines put out in
early June.
However, employers would still be required to provide reasonable
accommodations for employees who are exempt from mandatory
immunization based on the Americans with Disabilities Act, Title
VII of the Civil Rights Act and other federal laws.
As of June 11, Penn Medicine remains the only Pennsylvania
hospital requiring employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
Congratulations on this bold step forward.
There are some that predict that more employers, particularly
those in health care and emergency services, will probably
impose mandates if and when the vaccines get full FDA approval.
However, nearly every day we read that more of our colleges and
universities have said they will require vaccinations to enter college
this fall.
As the challenge to reach herd immunity continues, to reopen
businesses and to relax public-health restrictions, the arguments
for and against mandates continue to take shape.
If our local colleges and universities are requiring vaccination for
freshmen and college employees, it might be a very good idea to
have our hospitals and health systems require the COVID-19
vaccination, too.
One thing is for sure. " Mandates " are controversial, and we
must all continue to try and educate the public on the safety and
efficacy data and instill confidence in getting a COVID-19 vaccination.
