Letter to the Editor
Editor,
I would like to point out an important error in the otherwise excellent
piece in Philadelphia Medicine, entitled " Whole-patient Approach is
Desired Strategy. "
While noting that methadone " has the most evidence for reducing
morbidity and mortality, " you also state that " an outpatient treatment
program is the only way to access methadone. "
Our membership should be aware that Philadelphia has been in the
vanguard of providing access to methadone in the inpatient setting, a
rarity elsewhere. Since 1999, long before the opioid epidemic came into
focus, both Kirkbride Center and North Philadelphia Health Systems
have provided this service, inducting and stabilizing tens of thousands of
patients on methadone in the context of a rehab program and referring
seamlessly to outpatient providers upon completion of inpatient treatment.
This approach was originally the brainchild of Roland Lamb and others
at Community Behavioral Health in Philadelphia.
Patients and providers should be aware of this important treatment
option in our region. *
