In a room where everyone is telling him what
is bad and broken, Gene Kranz saw the big picture
and refocused his team. Because, in the end, combined
with a great deal of intelligence and focus, the pieces that
worked got the crew home.
So, it's 50 years later. 2020 was a problem...
what do we have that's good?
From its first issue, the focus of The Response has always been to answer that question. Like so
many of you, this year has given Berks SOS and those we are advocating for its fair share of
problems. Our routines we took for granted have been disrupted, our trajectories have been
blown off course, and like no year before us we are forced to adapt into a difficult life that
draws many parallels to Commander Lovell and his crew.
But there is hope, no one is alone, and as you are reading this there are entire organizations
in our county that are working to " solve the problem. " Consider this edition as your Mission
Control; each page will inform you of " what is working " and " what is good. "
As Editor, I dedicate this edition to the men and women in our community who have selflessly
dedicated their lives to serving their neighbor. You all have been the glue that kept Berks
County together this year. And to, once again, quote Gene Kranz, who amidst the peak of the
Apollo 13 crisis declared,
" I believe this is going to be our finest hour. "
