Taking precautions and properly disposing of unused and
outdated medication is crucial to ensure prescription drugs are
not diverted. Fortunately, most medication drop-boxes remain
accessible at local police stations. In fact, some pharmacies
have placed such medication disposal receptacles in their
stores. Even if individuals are not comfortable leaving their
homes to properly dispose of medications in their possession,
medication disposal bags continue to be offered for the safe
disposal of unused medications. Medication lock boxes are
also available for those that need to secure medications in their
homes. Medication safety is necessary and still possible.

Unfortunately, overdose deaths continue to rise. 2020 is likely
to have the most overdose deaths in Berks County than any
previous year. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the
capacity for treatment, even though the need for such services
continues to be in high demand. As we are learning, quarantine
and social distancing can lead to isolation. Unfortunately,
isolation contributes to substance use disorders and impedes
recovery and wellness. This does not mean that hope has been
lost. The resiliency and innovativeness of those that provide
substance use disorder treatment and recovery supports assures
that these vital services remain available.
Individuals reporting to emergency rooms who are overdose
survivors or exhibit signs of a substance use disorder continue
to be identified and intervened upon through Berks County's
highly successful Warm Handoff Program at the local
hospitals. Narcan® is available to law enforcement and other
first responders as well as to any Berks County resident. This
medication has saved hundreds of lives in our community.
