Arts & Culture in the Community New Murals in West Reading Wyomissing Art Students Assist with New Mural in West Reading M ike Miller, Wyomissing Art teacher, and the Wyomissing Area JSHS Public Art Workshop students created a new mural in collaboration with local lead artist Suzanne Fellows, which was installed on the wall behind Baldwin Brass on Court Street. Local artist Suzanne Fellows is in residence at the GoggleWorks Center and also an art professor at Reading Area Community College. The new mural is called Blue Arabesque and the inspiration comes from Islamic geometric patterns. This is Suzanne's first large outdoor mural project. Suzanne worked with the students on creating the unique square and triangle stencils. The students learned both the historic and cultural background to these interlocking designs, as well as the geometry skills needed to create them. Each student created their own tessellating design which is featured inside the larger shapes of the mural. Can you find the design inspired by softball? How about the Class of 2020? The elegant shapes and a metallic finish symbolically connect this artwork to the items found inside Baldwin Brass. The design and layout of the mural was created in the fall and tucked away for safe keeping in storage until the summer to place it on the wall. The first step in installing the mural on the wall includes painting an adhesive material. The next step includes placing the sections of the mural while using a scaffolding platform. Finally, Mike Miller and Suzanne Fellows place a UV resistant varnish to seal the mural. The mural was sponsored by Baldwin Brass, Wyomissing Area Education Foundation and Vicki Combs. There are several more mural projects coming up, so keep an eye out. 30 Avenues Fall 2020
