West Reading Police Department Receives Grant

embers of the West Reading Police Department recently visited Berks County
Community Foundation after receiving a grant of $6,500 to support the
department's K9 unit. The money will go toward a new heating and cooling
system for the patrol vehicle that is used by K9 Officer Brandon L. Breitenstein with
K9 Zea.
During their visit, K9 Zea hardly ever looked away from Officer Breitenstein as she
awaited his commands. The visit was arranged when West Reading Police Chief
Glenn Granitz Jr. sent a letter of thanks to the Community Foundation for the grant.
Granitz requested a chance to meet with the Community Foundation team in person.
The Community Foundation responded immediately because its team is always eager
to meet with local K9s. Many of the local K9 units receive financial support from the
Community Foundation.
The $6,500 from the Jay and Elaine Rosenson Fund of Berks County Community
Foundation is one of several grants that the West Reading Police Department has
received from the Community Foundation over the years for its K9 unit. Since 2015,
the department has received $34,639 from the Rosenson Fund, the Darrell and Gloria
Rank K9 Corps Fund, and the Richard Groff and Meda Kern K9 Corps Endowment
Fund. These are just three of the 360 funds that are administered by the Community
Foundation, which is located at Third and Court Streets in downtown Reading.
