36th Annual Fall Festival of the Arts
A
fter being forced to take a pause in 2020, the Fall Festival
of the Arts returns for three weeks of events at three
downtown Reading venues in 2021. The 2021 event is
dedicated to the memory of Don Hinkle, former Director of
Music at Trinity Lutheran Church who passed away in April
of 2020. Mr. Hinkle planted the seeds for what would become
the Fall Festival of the Arts in 1977 with an organ recital at
the church. Now in its 36th year, the event has expanded to
become one of the Berks County's premier showcases of the
visual and performing arts.
Fittingly, this year's festival begins with an organ recital at
Christ Episcopal Church on Friday, September 10. Eric Plutz,
University Organist at Princeton University, will perform three
symphonies from Louis Vierne, who served as the organist of
Notre-Dame de Paris from 1900 until his death in 1937. The
concert is being held in conjunction with a second performance
on Sunday, September 12, at Grace Lutheran Church in Lancaster.
Live theater is a hallmark of the festival, and this year the festival
brings a local story to the stage. Written by Jessica Dickey, The
Amish Project is a fictional exploration of the Amish schoolhouse
shootings that took place in Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania, on
October 2, 2006. The play, featuring eight gifted local actors,
explores the aftermath of this tragic event and the path to
forgiveness forged by the community.
Three performances of The Amish Project are scheduled for the
stage at the WCR Center for the Arts from September 17-19.
The festival closes with a celebration of the visual arts and an
exhibit of works by local artist Robert Pepper. A fascinating
collection of drawings, paintings, and photographs from Mr.
Pepper will be on display in the Hinz Room of Trinity Lutheran
Church.
The public is invited to the opening reception on Sunday,
September 19 from 1 to 3 p.m. Mr. Pepper will also hold a
Gallery Talk on Thursday, September 23 at 7:30 p.m. Both
events are free and open to the public. For more information,
