not have moved away from home. I would not have taken up
running or triathalon or wakeboarding.
I have in fact done ALL of these things and more because I
recognized it didn't matter if I was clumsy (I prefer to think
of myself as not concentrating on walking) or wasn't fast (the
tortoise ALWAYS finishes...even if it is last) or can't recite all
the digits of pi (I can balance my checkbook and that counts
for a lot). What matters is that I throw myself whole-heartedly
into everything that interests me and what happens,
happens. Success is not about achievement. Success is about
acquiring knowledge and applying it to make yourself a better
person. In doing so, you become a better friend, a better
teammate and a better community member.
I get to put this philosophy into action for this organization
and it gives me the giggles and all the feels. I'm honored to
have been a substitute COACH in my first year at Girls on
the Run Berks and I've seen first-hand the delight on girls'
faces when they make new friends or run more laps than
they did the previous week or, well, all of it!
Any other information you'd like to add about
the initiatives at Girls on the Run.
Pandemic, schemdemic!
Seriously, the pandemic upset school routines, upset social
lives and increased isolation for so many girls. We continued
to offer Girls on the Run during the pandemic, so shout-out
to all the girls, schools, community sites and Coaches who
stuck it out with us last year! You. Kick. Asphalt!
However, it was difficult for us to reach a lot of girls. Good
news is we are regaining our strength for 2021-2022 and
that includes a return to full in-person seasons AND a return
to our 5K celebration...IN-PERSON! Look for us out
and about in the community. If you have a girl in grades 3
through 8, reach out to me to find out more about the program
and sign her up! If you want to make an impact on the
girls of our communities, don't think about it, do it! Become
a Coach! Volunteer!
Girls on the Run is not only about empowerment for girls
but we are also about inclusion, diversity, equity and access.
