Make Good Use of Your Space

Make It Comfortable

Hang floating shelves on the walls to get papers and office
equipment off the desk, and use vertical file folders on the
desk to keep important papers within arm's reach. If you tend
to make piles, get a nice basket to tame your mail, notes, and
papers. If you prefer a clean desktop, designate one drawer for
your "to-do" papers.

When choosing the furniture and amenities for your office,
make sure that you are physically comfortable and that your
work space is conducive to productivity.

Show Off Your Style
There is no such thing as "one design fits all." While one
person may prefer the look of dark woods and rich colors,
someone else may favor a more whimsical look with bright
colors and clean lines. This is your chance to bring in designs
and items that best reflect your personality and interests. Don't
be restricted by what you think a home office should look like.
Make it your own since you will be the one spending the most
time there. Some people enjoy having their office walls filled
with photos of family and friends, while others find personal
photos to be distracting. You also could consider using posters
or any type of art that you find to be attractive and that expresses your personal style.

Your chair should be adjustable with adequate seat cushioning. If you're going to be spending a lot of time sitting,
get the best chair that you can afford. Do some research
about what types of chairs are available, and the benefits
of various types and models.
Add a couch or armchair to allow for additional seating
for guests, or to provide a place to read away from your
desk. If the office will be doing double-duty as an occasional room for overnight guests, consider purchasing a
good pull-out sofa or loveseat to provide sleeping space.
Install recessed lighting which is less harsh on your eyes.
But, don't forget to add a pretty desk lamp or table lamp
for both additional lighting and some added style. A
smaller desktop light focused on task areas that are used
for reading and writing will help to reduce eye strain.
