Geosynthetics for reinforcement
and stabilization

eosynthetics are widely used for reinforcement and stabilization,
particularly in transportation-related applications, including base
stabilization, reinforced soil slopes (RSS) and mechanically stabilized earth
(MSE) walls.
This issue of Geosynthetics considers many such applications from
multiple viewpoints. Sachin Mandavkar and Mehari Weldu look at very
tall MSE walls and RSS through several case studies in "Geogrid reinforced
soil structures reach new heights." Benjamin Mahaffay, Jeremy Robinson,
Jeffrey Gagnon and Gregory Norwood outline groundbreaking research
into geogrids in runways with "Using geosynthetics in flexible airport
pavements." And Jeffery T. Hoilman and Stanley M. Miller present a case
study of streambank stabilization with the assistance of elementary school
students in "Streambank restoration using engineered bank stabilization."
In addition, E. Silva and T. D. Stark clarify considerable confusion about
various terminology for Elvaloy-based geomembranes in this issue's Update
section. Robert M. Koerner, George R. Koerner and Y. "Grace" Hsuan
respond to a wide variety of geosynthetics questions in the column "The
GMA Techline Answers All." The IGS North America's new president, John
McCartney, discusses his vision for the organization in the "IGS-NA News"
column. And Jonathan Curry highlights Geosynthetic Materials Association
(GMA) happenings in the "GMA News" column.
From geogrids to geomembranes to geotextiles, geosynthetics of many
types in innovative applications are featured in this issue.
