Results
Due to the complexity of the systems, it was integral to use
the first block to focus on ensuring the data collection system
captured the information properly. The result of the first block
proved that the instrumentation worked well, but the block
was severely underloaded, which resulted in shearing from the
loaded borehole. It was ascertained that due to the porosity of
the block and the load reduction from the additional wiring,
it did not possess enough explosives to produce the desired
results. Though this was a minor setback, it fully justified the
safe incremental approach.
The second block performed satisfactorily and was broken
into 10 larger pieces, heaving a maximum of 20 ft (6.1 m).
The resulting powder factor was 2 pounds per cubic yard (lbs/
yd3
) (3.37 kilograms per cubic meter (kg/m3
hole pattern footage, and a powder factor of a 1 lbs/yd3
), based on borefor
the
larger 26 by 26 in (0.66 by 0.66 m) polystyrene packing
peanuts area.
Figure 4 shows the raw data collected during the second
test with wave traces scaled to the individual instrumentation
voltages. Across the left pane each piece of instrumentation is
depicted with an applicable voltage scale. This 40 millisecond
(ms) window begins with triggering the fiber optic system by
powder column deflagration, followed by borehole pressurizations,
then the close pencil probe change in pressure, and
finally the block beginning to move.

The data collected provided precise timings which can be
seen in table 1. The distances and times associated with the
pressurized boreholes within table 1 are not logical, but this
could be due to a number of factors. The flexible lead piezo
electric ribbon sensors positioning could have affected the
time at which the pressurization was captured as well as the
makeup of the concrete-polystyrene mixture between borehole
and the pressurized hole. However, the data captured is
accurately depicted with regards to how the instrumentation
was constructed. In addition, the far pencil timing is suspect
based on the arrival time when compared to other capture
