T he technical challenge of developing a sound system that would complement the unique design of the Moreleta Dutch Reformed Church outside Pretoria were addressed by Chris Leeson of Claasen Auret Consulting Engineers and Chris Jonker, the church’s technical director. Together they defined their requirements and awarded a contract to the Wild & Marr engineering team headed up by Tom Crosswell. Tom has subsequently joined Pro Acoustic Consortium as a Pro-AV design consultant . Working with project manager, Gustav Teitge, the two put forward a proposal using JBL Vertec DP selfpowered loudspeakers for the FOH loudspeaker cluster and HiQ NET, a digital protocol which is able to handle system wide-configuration, routing and control. “The massive venue, with 3-level high balconies, and a stage that is nearly the size of their old church, is impressive to say the least,” says Teitge. “The sweeping design also requires a lot of factors to be considered. We worked closely with the architects to make everything happen, both acoustically and practically. The venue will be used for a variety of applications, including services, live The audio system at the Dutch Reformed Church in Moreleta Park was designed by Chris Leeson from Claasen Auret Consulting Engineers and Chris Jonker, the church’s technical director. The installation was completed by Wild & Marr and sets a standard for sound reinforcement systems in Africa. According to Jonker, the entire system is a tribute to Harmon Pro and is indicative of the high quality of products in their stable. broadcasts and concerts. Taking all this into consideration, a compact, yet powerful line array able to provide both clarity and overall coverage was essential.” The Line Array, incorporating 20 Vertec VT4888’s and 8 sub-woofers, ensured complete coverage of the entire auditorium. The clarity and intelligibility of the system are complimented by the full frequency response and audio fidelity essential to provide modern-day gospel music. The full audio system includes a range of audio sources and monitoring systems, together with all the necessary wired and wireless microphones required for an installation of this nature. According to Jonker, the total solution is a credit to Harmon Pro and is indicative of the high quality of the products in their stable. The installation is the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere and there is no doubt that it has set a reference standard in the industry for Sound Reinforcement. In addition to the main system, the church has two fully functional breakaway rooms. These are powered by JBL AE Series loudspeakers, with portable racks which can be used for a variety of purposes, including youth concerts and seminars. The church also has translation booths, a recording studio and an edit suite, establishing it as the most outstanding venue of its kind in South Africa. The venue also holds up to 5 services a day, and has played host to a number of international contemporary music concerts. he request from Nigeria for the design, supply and installation of an audio, lighting and video system for the Good News Baptist church came nearly two years before the final completion of the project in April 2005 when a small Prosound installation team spent three weeks in Lagos to complete the last stages of the installation. The sound system was designed around the Electro-Voice SX300 loudspeaker systems, a very popular loudspeaker choice for church installations because of its exceptional sound quality and intelligibility it offers for speech. AV goes big at Good News Baptist Church in Nigeria T Coupled with a pair of Electro-Voice MTL-2 sub-bass loudspeaker systems, this option offered a full-range system capable of handling all speech requirements, as well as offering quality audio for the full orchestra and choir performing in the purpose-built 1200 seat church. Electro-Voice EVID6.2 loudspeakers were used for under-balcony fills, and Electro-Voice SX100+ loudspeakers for stage monitors. A Rane RPM26 digital signal processor was utilized for all processing requirements, and a Midas Venice 32 channel mixing console for frontof-house control. For communication and 23 run-of-show the Prosound Commpac ringcommunication system and Prosound PRS1 paging/run-of-show system were installed. The lighting system consisted of 5 pre-wired lighting bars complete with a compliment of generic luminaries, controlled with a Zero88 Fat Frog console and Zero88 Chilli dimmers. The basic video system included a Sanyo video projector and Kramer video DA. Due to the lack of reliable power sources, a UPS system as well as a 3-phase power conditioning system was installed in the venue.
