By the 2010 World Cup the infrastructure to deliver mobile TV around the world will be firmly in place. With the memories of the 2006 World Cup starting to fade, we look back and ask whether the bold predictions made about mobile TV were realized. O n the eve of the World Cup 2006, Informa Telecoms & Media Mobile was forecasting that users accessing World Cup action via streaming and broadcast services would generate $300m £163 million of revenue. Their study, ‘Mobile TV: Broadcast and Mobile Multimedia’ said the World Cup would provide the spark for the launch of a number of broadcast services in Europe and pave the way for real growth over the next five years. Informa’s David McQueen is quoted as saying, “As soon as the 2008 Olympics, we'll all be much more prepared to watch TV on our phones, and by the 2010 World Cup the infrastructure will be mature and one in thirteen mobile phone users worldwide will own a mobile TV handset.” But now that memories of triumphs and disaster on the pitch are beginning to fade, what were the results on the small screen? Perhaps the best clue that results were not going to be quite as the analysts had predicted came from the mobile phone operators themselves. Even before the first ball was kicked, the industry was downplaying expectations with voices of experience pointing out that broadcast mobile TV was barely out of the pilot stages in most major markets. 3G coverage is patchy, viewing quality poor and services priced at a premium so uptake of streamed services during the World Cup was always going to be limited. Now, in the cold light of day, we can examine the reality of take-up, revenues and of users’ experiences with mobile data during the competition. Perhaps predictably, FIFA World Cup During the 2006 FIFA World Cup 3 users in the UK were able to watch the coverage on their 3G mobile phones at no cost. “The World Cup has put mobile TV on the map,” says 3 marketing director Graeme Oxby. 3’s highlights channel proved very popular, with the equivalent of a full-capacity Arsenal stadium tuning in daily to catch the highlights and relive the action. Soccer mobile content was most popular in Italy, the tournament winners. According to figures from Telephia, 6 percent of Italian mobile subscribers accessed World Cup content on their mobile devices, as compared to 3 percent for French mobile subscribers. Not surprisingly, European 3G mobile subscribers posted higher rates for accessing World Cup Soccer content on their phones at 14 percent, while only 3 percent of non-3G mobile users accessed soccer content. Eight percent of European mobile subscribers who accessed soccer content on their phone watched via mobile TV. Sky Sports was the top channel, securing a 14 percent share of World Cup mobile TV users. Overall, World Cup content received through text alerts was most popular 38% , followed by content through wireless internet at 29 percent. Nineteen percent downloaded a World Cup ringtone, while 15 and 14 percent downloaded wallpapers and video clips, respectively. Revenues are much more difficult to ascertain although current indications are that they fell a long way short of Informa’s heady predictions. “I don't think we've seen a boom,” says Matt Hatton, an analyst with the Yankee Group. “There's been some additional content purchased, but boom 25 Warning : Unknown : The session id contains invalid characters, valid characters are only a-z, A-Z and 0-9 in Unknown on line 0 Warning : Unknown : Failed to write session data files .
