T he IBC’s Innovation Awards received more than 70 entries from suppliers vying to be recognized for the innovation and professionalism within the broadcast industry. A panel of international journalists, chaired by IBC's Michael Lumley, reduced the nominations to a shortlist of three in each of three categories: content creation, content management and content delivery. They then nominated three more for the Judge's Award. This most prestigious of the new awards covers technology applications that combine content creation, management and delivery in a unique way that delivers outstanding benefits for users. “It was a tough process,” says AV Specialist publisher Kevan Jones. “We examined some truly innovative projects from all over the world and were in awe at the commitment shown by vendors who’d obviously gone out of their way to provide original business solutions.” All the hard work paid off when champagne glasses were raised at an awards ceremony which took place during IBC. The Judge's Award went to Infront Sports and Media and Host Broadcast Services for their work on new media production at the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Innovation in content creation Taking the award for innovative application of technology in content creation was BBC R&D and Red Bee Media for the Piero sports graphics project, which creates a 3D model of play from live video in real time. Speaking at the ceremony, principal engineer for BBC R&D Graham Thomas said It's always very rewarding to see the results of our R&D work ending up on screen, and it's been fun to work with so many people across the BBC and Red Bee Media in order to bring the Piero project to fruition. I like to think we have risen to the challenge of improving our toolset as new technologies come along, and aim to be slightly ahead of the wave if possible. I guess this award is in recognition of that aspiration for all those years. Innovation in content management The T-Systems project Digital cinema: the digital workflow in the digital cinema chain demonstrates how a carrier grade global communications network can deliver digital movies almost anywhere in the world, and won the content management award.
