GREENKOTE ANNOUNCES ANTI-CORROSION COATING WITH 5,000-HOUR METAL PROTECTION
Greenkote has announced an advance in its line of corrosion protection. The new Greenkote G5k coating delivers a minimum
of 5,000 hours of corrosion protection in salt spray testing for metals, enabling it to meet ASTM Specification B117, an
industry standard for accelerated testing of the corrosion resistance of metals
and coated metals in a salt-spray corrosive environment.
" With G5k, we're upping the ante in anti-corrosion coatings, " says Mark Gore,
CEO. " Greenkote has become synonymous with metal corrosion protection across
a broad range of needs. Now, G5k becomes the new high-end in Greenkote highperformance
coatings - no red rust after 5,000 hours of standardized corrosion
testing by a recognized industry laboratory. This level of performance is aimed at
the most challenging anti-corrosion applications, including those in marine and
coastal environments as well as many automotive and industrial uses that expose
metal parts to wetness or harsh chemicals for long periods of time. For these
types of applications G5k can extend service life and reduce maintenance and
replacement costs significantly. "
Manager of Engineering, Nick Haggund says, " It's important to remember that
G5k offers all the other Greenkote technology benefits, as well. It's not just on the
surface, Greenkote coatings are actually diffused into the metal. This gives them
superior adhesion, longer life, and more conformal coverage, which allows their
use on complex geometries such as small threaded parts. It also provides an
excellent surface for painting and rubber bonding. "
Hagglund says Greenkote also eliminates the introduction of hydrogen
embrittlement, an intrinsic problem with many traditional anti-corrosion
coatings. The Greenkote coating process doesn't use any hazardous chemicals or
produce any toxic byproducts, so it is eco-friendly, RoHS compliant, and free of
environmental regulations. For these reasons, he says, Greenkote coatings have
been replacing many older anti-corrosion processes such as electroplating, hotdip,
sherardizing, and metal flake. The coatings can be applied to a broad range
of metal parts, from threaded fasteners to stamped and cast pieces, in sizes from
0.2 to 78 inches.

NEW WATER-BASED TREATMENT REDUCES SURFACE PREP TIME
Oxford Advanced Surfaces, (OAS), in the surface preparation of plastic and
composite components for painting and lacquering market, has developed a new
treatment called KOTEFAST. It says this reduces surface preparation time by 90
percent compared to the existing approach of sanding. It is available in a waterbased
formulation, avoiding the need to use solvents.
KOTEFAST was tested on a truck panel and the treatment was recorded at less
than 15 minutes. An identical panel took three hours to prepare using the usual
method of manual sanding, indicating a time saving of more than 90 percent, the
company says.
KOTEFAST also delivered a significant improvement in quality, enabled by the
consistency of its straightforward spray application process, OAS says. The adhesion of the paint or coating to the substrate
is improved as the KOTEFAST chemically bonds to both using the company's proprietary " Onto " technology.
Application by spray allows even difficult areas, such as internal corners, difficult angles and blind voids to be easily
prepared, leading to improved quality finish compared to sanding including on complex parts.
As well as being available in a water-based formulation, KOTEFAST avoids environmental challenges which arise with
sanding dust.
" Having a water-based treatment that reduces surface preparation time by 90 percent could be a game changer, " says
Dr. Jon-Paul Griffiths, Chief Technology Officer, OAS. " At a stroke, we have improved the efficiency and productivity in the
preparation of plastic and composite parts for painting and lacquering. KOTEFAST has been tested rigorously and is
already being used by two OEMs, and we are now working closely with other OEMs and other customers to plot a course
for its full integration. "
