NEWS & INFORMATION ON
SURFACE FINISHING
BY BOB SMITH
T
his issue, CASF News will conclude coverage of our
Surface Finishing in Canada Impact Study, with the
final of three parts. This one contains all the important
data tables - data that will surprise you all, I think.
We began with the Executive Summary in the Jan/Feb issue of
CFCM, followed with our important coverage of the unfolding
and very relevant Carbon Tax article in the Mar/Apr edition, and
then Part 2 of our Impact Study in the May/June edition.
Here, then, is a continuation of the condensed final section of our
Orr & Boss Impact Study.
Overview of the Surface Industry
The direct contribution and economic output of the surface
finishing market in Canada is estimated to be $2.6 billion, a
number that will be surprising to many. However, the combined
direct and indirect contribution tops $3.5 billion! Before
proceeding to discuss the details of the surface finishing
market, we would like to describe the value chain, covered more
completely in the full study available online on our website.
Surface Finishing Industry Value Chain
Our industry is principally split between job finishers and captive

shops. The job shop acts as a service to the industry and generally
focuses on one or several specialty areas, e.g. decorative nickel,
corrosion-resistant zinc and alloys, EN, functional chromium
or a combination of these and many other almost endless
finishes: wherever a demand exists. The captive shop will have
a surface finishing department as part of the overall production
of the finished product, e.g. the chromium wear-resistant
coating electroplated onto a shock absorber as part of the entire
manufacturing process.
The surface finishing industry is supported by many suppliers,
both large and small, local and global. The major suppliers are the
specialized equipment manufacturers, some of whom provide
state-of-the-art, turnkey lines supported by equally high-end
and integrated ancillary equipment like filtration, rectification,
effluent and recycling management systems, automated chemical
control, and more. The industry is supplied by chemistry from
many sources, from local to global raw materials and blends
some of which are specialized, right up to suppliers of unique and
complex proprietary chemical processes to produce the required
and specified end product.
The diagram below pictorially describes the Surface Finishing
Value Chain.
